Iron is one of the most abundant metals in the universe. It is also one of the most useful in biochemical functions. In the human body, iron is present in all cells and participates in several vital functions. It assists in the normal transport of oxygen in the body and contributes to the formation of red blood cells and hemoglobin. Iron also helps to maintain the healthy functioning of the immune system and plays a role in the process of cell division. In addition, iron helps to reduce tiredness and fatigue.
Iron is supplied in the form of carbonyl iron, a preparation of small particles of highly purified metallic iron (98%). "Carbonyl" describes the process of making iron particles (iron pentacarbonyl gas), resulting in small particles (<5 mcm) that are slowly absorbed (allowing continuous release for 1 to 2 days). Therefore, carbonylated iron can be consumed more comfortably than ionized forms of iron.
