What nutrients contribute to Bone and Joint Health

Calcium, magnesium, manganese, zinc, phosphorus, protein and vitamins D and K contribute to the maintenance of normal bones. Vitamin D contributes to the normal absorption and utilisation of calcium and phosphorus. Vitamin C contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of bones and cartilage. Manganese also contributes to the normal formation of connective tissue. Calcium, magnesium, potassium and vitamin D contribute to normal muscle function.

What to consider

Compare the dose per serving and the percentage of the nutrient reference value (NRV). In combined formulas, check that nutrients with bone claims are present in significant amounts. The collection also includes products with collagen, glucosamine, chondroitin, MSM, hyaluronic acid, organic silicon, curcumin and boswellia. If you have persistent joint pain or a diagnosed condition, speak to your doctor, as there are causes that supplementation cannot resolve.

FAQs

The most studied supplements for joint health are undenatured type II collagen (UC-II), glucosamine, chondroitin, and hyaluronic acid — which nourish cartilage and synovial fluid. For inflammation reduction, boswellia (frankincense) and omega-3 have strong clinical evidence.

Vitamin C contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of cartilage, and manganese contributes to the normal formation of connective tissue. Ingredients frequently associated with this area — glucosamine, chondroitin, MSM, hyaluronic acid, hydrolysed collagen — do not have authorised claims in the European Union.

Because all three have claims related to bones and are complementary in their composition: calcium is the most abundant mineral in bone tissue, vitamin D contributes to its normal absorption, and vitamin K also contributes to the maintenance of normal bones. For this reason, it is a common combination among manufacturers.
