What is a prebiotic?
It is a substrate used by microorganisms in the intestine. In practice, it corresponds to dietary fibres that the human small intestine does not digest and which reach the colon intact. Inulin is the most studied example.
What's the difference between inulin and psyllium?
Inulin is a soluble fructan, naturally present in chicory root, artichokes, garlic and onions. Psyllium is the husk of the Plantago ovata seed and forms a viscous gel in contact with water. These are fibres with different physical properties and distinct applications.
Do I need to drink more water?
Yes, and this is important. Fiber absorbs water, and psyllium in particular should always be taken with a full glass of liquid and followed by more water. Without sufficient liquid, it can cause an obstruction of the esophagus or intestines.
