What is Vitamin K2 and what distinguishes MK-7 from MK-4

Vitamin K2, or menaquinone, is one of two natural forms of vitamin K — the other is K1, or phylloquinone, found mainly in dark green leafy vegetables. K2 is found in fermented foods and animal products, and is named after the number of isoprenoid units in its side chain: MK-4 has four, MK-7 has seven. MK-7 is usually obtained by fermenting soybeans with Bacillus subtilis natto and remains in circulation longer; MK-4 is eliminated more quickly.

Vitamin K as a nutrient, whatever its form: contributes to normal blood clotting and to the maintenance of normal bones. These are the only two claims in the European register for this vitamin.

Doses and an important warning

If you take anticoagulants, such as warfarin, do not start any vitamin K supplement without first speaking to your doctor: vitamin K directly interferes with the mechanism of action of these medications.

Perguntas frequentes

What is the difference between vitamin K1 and vitamin K2?
These are the two natural forms of vitamin K. K1, or phylloquinone, is mainly found in dark green leafy vegetables. K2, or menaquinone, is found in fermented foods and animal products.
And between MK-7 and MK-4?
They are two types of menaquinone that differ in side-chain length — four and seven isoprenoid units, respectively — and, consequently, in the time they remain in circulation. MK-7 is usually obtained by soy fermentation; MK-4 is usually synthesised.
Why is K2 so often combined with vitamin D3?
Because both have authorised claims relating to the maintenance of normal bones, and vitamin D additionally contributes to the normal absorption and utilisation of calcium.
