NOW Foods Methyl Folate 1,000 mcg contains as its sole active ingredient Folate (6S)-5-MTHF Quatrefolic® (1,000 mcg of (6S)-5-MTHF = 1,700 mcg DFE per tablet) — the biologically active form naturally present in food and in the human body.

Folate exists in multiple forms: folic acid (the most common synthetic form in conventional supplementation) needs to be converted by the body, through various enzyme reactions dependent on the MTHFR enzyme, before it can be used. This conversion can be less efficient in people with genetic variants of the MTHFR gene (namely the C677T and A1298C variants), which are relatively common in the general population. (6S)-5-MTHF is the final form of this metabolic pathway — ready to be used directly by the body, without the need for additional conversion.

Quatrefolic® is a patented form of (6S)-5-MTHF produced by Gnosis S.p.A., protected by international patent. It is recognized for its superior stability and its effectiveness demonstrated in bioavailability studies. This form is the same as that used by the brain — unlike conventional folic acid, (6S)-5-MTHF can cross the blood-brain barrier, being relevant for supporting neurological well-being, the production of serotonin, dopamine and other neurotransmitters, and mood balance.
