Curcumin

Viva Saudável's Curcumin collection features supplements from brands such as Thorne Research, NOW Foods, and M.J.S. Med. You can find curcumin in 1000 mg phytosome, 95% standardized curcuminoid extract, and combined formulas with milk thistle, in capsules.

What is Curcumin

Curcumin is the main curcuminoid in Curcuma longa — turmeric, a plant from the Zingiberaceae family, the same as ginger. It is the compound responsible for the characteristic yellow color of the rhizome and represents only 2 to 5% of its dry weight, which explains why supplements use concentrated extracts.

Free-form curcumin has reduced oral absorption and is rapidly metabolized. This is why manufacturers resort to formulation technologies. Phytosome is a complex with phospholipids; other approaches include association with piperine — the alkaloid of black pepper — and liposomal formats. The designation 95% refers to the standardization in total curcuminoids of the extract, not the percentage of curcumin in the final product. When comparing, it is the formulation technology and standardization that distinguish the products, more so than the declared milligramage.

How to take it and what to consider

Being fat-soluble, curcumin is better absorbed when taken with a meal containing fat. Interactions with anticoagulants have been described, and there have been reports of hepatic reactions associated with high-dose curcumin supplements, which led several European authorities to issue warnings. If you have liver or biliary disease, gallstones, are taking medication, or have scheduled surgery, talk to your doctor before starting. Not recommended during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

How to choose a curcumin supplement

Turmeric is the root; curcumin is one of its compounds, present in the root in a small percentage. In supplements, almost everything comes down to three points: the extract, the percentage of curcuminoids, and the method for improving absorption.

1. Standardized extract, not root powder

Most products use extracts standardized to curcuminoids, often at 95%. Turmeric powder from the kitchen has a much lower percentage, so the doses are not comparable.

2. Absorption technology

Curcumin is poorly soluble in water, which is why formulas use phytosomes with phospholipids, piperine from black pepper, micelles, or oils. The label indicates which was used, and this changes the required dose.

3. Alone or in a formula

There are curcumin-only products and formulas that combine it with other plants, polyphenols, or enzymes. For combinations, check how much curcumin is in the daily dose before comparing prices.

4. Precautions

Speak to your doctor if you take anticoagulants or blood sugar medication, if you have gallstones or bile duct obstruction, or if you are going to have surgery. It is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding in supplement doses.

Perguntas frequentes
