EPA and DHA

The EPA and DHA collection at Viva Saudável brings together omega-3 supplements from brands such as Nordic Naturals, Thorne Research, WHC, Enerzona, NOW Foods, Rosita, Lamberts, and Zeinpharma. You'll find fish oil in capsules and liquid form, krill oil, cod liver oil, concentrated formulas, and specific versions for children and pregnancy.

What are EPA and DHA and what dose should you look for?

EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) are long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids from the omega-3 family, found mainly in fatty fish and marine oils. EPA and DHA contribute to the normal functioning of the heart, with the beneficial effect obtained from 250 mg per day; DHA contributes to the maintenance of normal brain function and the maintenance of normal vision, also from 250 mg daily.

How to compare the products in this collection

The number that matters is the EPA and DHA content per capsule, not the total grammage of the oil: a 1000 mg fish oil capsule can contain 300 mg of EPA+DHA in one product and more than double in another. Also check the chemical form — triglyceride, ethyl ester, or phospholipid in the case of krill — and the existence of oxidation and heavy metal analyses per batch. Liquid formats allow for higher doses with fewer capsules, and cod liver oil naturally provides vitamins A and D, which requires attention to the total dose during pregnancy.

Perguntas frequentes

How much EPA and DHA should I take daily?
The authorised reference in the European Union is 250 mg daily of combined EPA and DHA. This is the dose from which a contribution to normal heart function can be claimed, and also the threshold for DHA alone for the brain and vision. Many concentrated formulas far exceed this amount in a single capsule — always compare the label.
What is the difference between triglyceride, ethyl ester, and phospholipid?
These are the chemical forms in which EPA and DHA are supplied. Natural fish oil is in triglyceride form. Industrial concentration normally converts it to ethyl ester, and some manufacturers then convert it back to triglyceride (indicated as rTG or re-esterified triglyceride). Krill oil provides them bound to phospholipids. The forms differ in absorption profile and production cost, and the label does not always state which one it is — if not indicated, it is worth asking.
Fish oil, krill oil or cod liver oil?
Fish oil is the source with the widest range of concentrations and and prices. Krill oil typically has less EPA and DHA per capsule, but delivers them in phospholipids and naturally contains astaxanthin. Cod liver oil provides naturally occurring vitamins A and D, which is an advantage for some and a limitation for others — during pregnancy, total vitamin A intake must be accounted for.
