Magnesium Supplements

Magnesium in capsules and powder: citrate, malate and threonate

Magnesium is an essential cofactor in over 300 enzymatic reactions in the body, playing a central role in neuromuscular function, ATP synthesis and the functioning of the nervous system. It contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue, to normal muscle function and to the normal functioning of the nervous system. Bioavailability and digestive tolerance vary depending on the chemical form of the salt, so the choice of format should be guided by the intended goal.

Magnesium bisglycinate (also called glycinate; magnesium chelated with glycine) offers high bioavailability and good gastrointestinal tolerance. Magnesium citrate offers good absorption. Magnesium malate is frequently sought after in contexts of tiredness and fatigue. Magnesium threonate (Magtein) is a more recent form, sought by those who value support for cognitive function.

At Viva Saudável you will find magnesium from premium brands, with highly absorbable chelated forms, from Thorne, NOW Foods and Ecogenetics.

How to choose your magnesium

Magnesium contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue, to the normal functioning of the nervous system, and to normal muscle function. With over 40 supplements on this page, these five criteria will help you find the one most suitable for you.

1. Look at the elemental magnesium, not the compound weight

The label may state “1000 mg of magnesium malate,” but this corresponds to about 150 mg of magnesium. What counts is the elemental magnesium per dose, which appears in the nutritional table. The reference value for adults is 375 mg per day, combining diet and supplements.

2. Choose the form

  • Bisglycinate (glycinate): magnesium bound to the amino acid glycine. Often chosen by those with a sensitive stomach.See the collection of magnesium bisglycinate.
  • Citrate: a very common and economical form. In high doses, it can have a laxative effect.
  • Malate: magnesium bound to malic acid, naturally present in fruit.
  • L-threonate (Magtein): patented form with little elemental magnesium per capsule, so the daily dose usually requires several capsules.
  • Taurate: magnesium bound to the amino acid taurine.
  • Combined formulas: combine several forms of magnesium, or magnesium with B-complex vitamins.

3. The format: capsules, tablets, or powder

Capsules and tablets are practical for taking with you. Powder dissolves in water and allows you to adjust the dose precisely, which is useful when the daily dose would correspond to many capsules.

4. How to take

Taking magnesium with a meal and splitting the dose into two intakes helps you better tolerate higher doses. If you take medication, speak to your pharmacist: magnesium can reduce the absorption of some medications and it may be necessary to space out your intakes.

5. Do not overdo the dose

For magnesium from supplements, EFSA indicates 250 mg per day as the maximum tolerable level; above this, mild laxative effects may occur. Do not exceed the daily intake indicated on the label and, if you have kidney problems, speak to your doctor before taking magnesium.

Perguntas frequentes
