Omega 3

Omega 3: EPA, DHA, Fish and Krill Oil

Omega-3 fatty acids – mainly EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) – are essential lipids that the body does not synthesise in sufficient quantities and must be obtained through diet or supplementation. They contribute to normal heart function, the maintenance of brain function and vision, and play a recognised role in modulating the inflammatory response.

The quality of an omega-3 supplement depends on three factors: the concentration of EPA and DHA per capsule, the molecular form (re-esterified triglycerides offer better absorption than ethyl esters), and purity, attested by independent certifications such as IFOS, which guarantee the absence of heavy metals and oxidation. Sources vary between fish oil, cod liver oil (naturally rich in vitamins A and D), and krill oil (with phospholipids and astaxanthin).

At Viva Saudável, we distribute omega-3 from premium brands such as Nordic Naturals, WHC, and Enerzona, offering highly concentrated forms and quality certification.

FAQs

EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) primarily has an anti-inflammatory action and is especially beneficial for cardiovascular health and mood. DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) is structural—it is the main fatty acid in the brain and retina, essential for neurological development and cognition. Most adults benefit from a supplement with both.

The triglyceride form is the most bioavailable, as it is the natural form found in fish. Ethyl esters are more common and cheaper, but have lower absorption. Nordic Naturals, available at Viva Saudável, is one of the few brands that guarantees certified omega-3 in triglyceride form.

Individuals on anticoagulant medication, pregnant or breastfeeding women, those with fish or shellfish allergies, or with scheduled surgery or a medical condition should seek professional advice before use.
