How to choose your B-complex

B vitamins contribute to normal energy metabolism, to the normal functioning of the nervous system, and to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue. On this page, you will find complete complexes and isolated B vitamins; these five criteria will help you decide between them.

1. Complete complex or isolated vitamin

A B-complexbrings together all eight vitamins in a single dose. Isolated vitamins(B12, B6, B1, B2, folate) allow for higher doses of a single vitamin and are usually chosen under the guidance of a healthcare professional. If you take a multivitamin, check if it already includes the B-complex before adding another.

2. Methylated forms or standard forms

Methylcobalamin (B12) and methylfolate (folate) are already methylated forms; cyanocobalamin and folic acid are the equivalent non-methylated forms. B6 also appears in two forms: pyridoxine and P-5-P. They are distinguished by the production process and cost, and all count towards the reference value indicated on the label.

3. Check the dose and the NRV percentage

The nutritional table indicates the mg or µg of each vitamin and the percentage of the nutrient reference value (NRV). Pay attention to vitamin B6: in 2023, EFSA revised the tolerable upper intake level to 12 mg per day for adults. Products with higher doses are intended for use under the supervision of a healthcare professional.

4. The format

  • Capsules and tablets: the most common format, with a fixed dose.
  • Sublinguals and lozenges: dissolve in the mouth, useful for those who do not like swallowing capsules.
  • Liquids with droppers: allow the dose to be adjusted drop by drop.
  • Timed-release: distribute the release over several hours.

5. How to take

B-complex is usually taken in the morning, with a meal. Riboflavin (B2) can give urine an intense yellow color in the following hours: this is normal. In case of pregnancy, breastfeeding, or medication, talk to your doctor before supplementing.

Perguntas frequentes

Siga sempre a toma indicada no rótulo.
Há doses de vitaminas B a evitar?
Sim.
