Isolated or multimineral

If you are looking for a specific mineral, the isolated product allows you to control the dose precisely. A multimineral complex covers several needs in a single dose, usually with lower doses of each nutrient. In any case, compare the elemental mineral per dose and the percentage of the nutrient reference value (NRV) indicated on the label. If you are taking medication, are pregnant, or have any clinical condition, speak to your doctor before supplementing — iron, in particular, should not be taken without prior evaluation.

How to choose a mineral supplement

This page brings together isolated minerals and multimineral complexes. If you already know which one you are looking for, use the buttons at the top to go directly to that mineral's page; if you are still deciding, these four criteria will resolve most of your questions.

1. Start with the mineral, not the brand

  • Magnesium: contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue and to normal muscle function.
  • Zinc: contributes to the normal function of the immune system and to the maintenance of normal skin, hair, and nails.
  • Iron: contributes to normal oxygen transport and to the normal formation of red blood cells.
  • Seleniumand iodine: contribute to normal thyroid function and to the normal production of thyroid hormones.
  • Calcium: contributes to the maintenance of normal bones and teeth and to normal muscle function.

2. The form: chelated, organic or inorganic

In chelatedforms, the mineral is bound to an amino acid (bisglycinate, glycinate, picolinate). In organicforms, it is bound to an acid (citrate, malate, gluconate). In inorganicforms, it is bound to oxides, carbonates, or sulfates, which concentrate more mineral per gram. This changes the amount per capsule and digestive tolerance.

3. Isolated or multimineral

An isolated supplement gives you control over the dose of a single mineral. A multimineral covers several in one take, with lower doses of each. If you already take a multivitamin, check what it already includes before adding isolated products.

4. Dose, interactions and precautions

Compare the elemental mineral per servingand the percentage of the reference intake, not the weight of the compound. At high doses, zinc competes with copper and calcium with iron, and some minerals reduce the absorption of medications, so it is advisable to space out the doses. Iron deserves special attention: it accumulates in the body and its deficiency should be confirmed with a blood test, so speak to your doctor before starting.

Perguntas frequentes
